![]() Both Spotify and Tidal will present the user with personalized playlists, based on listening history and algorithmic jiggery-pokery. There’s not a huge amount of difference here. Tidal has a very similar feature now, called - can you guess? - ‘Tidal Connect’. But the advantage it held for quite a while with ‘Spotify Connect‘, which allows paying customers to stream directly to systems on a common network, has lately been removed. Tidal has to make do with integration into Apple CarPlay. Spotify’s ‘Car Thing’ (a little touchscreen device to enable safe and stable streaming while you’re driving) is a nice point of difference. And naturally enough both Spotify and Tidal support Google Chromecast and Apple AirPlay. It’s available on iOS too, and can be integrated into your Sonos system. Tidal can be accessed via quite a few televisions, too - it’s pretty much a fixture on the Android TV interface. Its app also shows up on any number of smart TV interfaces. Spotify is available on the most recent Sony and Microsoft games consoles, for example, and can be accessed on quite a few smartwatches and other connected wearables too. Obviously both services have been working on making themselves available on as wide a variety of platforms as possible. Spotify has been promising a ‘HiFi’ tier of its own for quite a while now - but details (of the launch date, of the number of titles that will be available, and of exactly what ‘HiFi’ means in this context) remain sketchy in the extreme. ‘Tidal Masters’ use MQA technology to stream at a giddy 9216kbps. A top-of-the-shop ‘HiFi Plus’ subscription, meanwhile, buys access to some music mastered in Sony 360 Reality Audio and Dolby Atmos spatial audio, plus access to millions of truly high-resolution audio titles. Tidal, by way of contrast, streams at a CD-quality 1411kbps on its ‘HiFi’ tier. If you’re paying for Spotify, rather than using the free tier, everything comes across at 320kbps. Spotify’s streams run at three compression rates: a frankly miserly 96kbps, 160kbps and 320kbps. Here’s where the most significant differences between Spotify and Tidal can be found. Unless you’ve particularly catholic tastes (I am still waiting for Ginger Thompson’s glorious Boy Watcher to show up on either service), you’ll be able to find the content you’re after on either Spotify or Tidal. Its co-founder and chief executive, Daniel Ek, said he had been “too ambitious in investing ahead of our revenue growth”.When you’re talking about numbers of this size, it’s obvious there’s a massive amount of overlap between the two libraries - the likes of Neil Young and Joni Mitchell notwithstanding. ![]() ![]() In January the streaming company said it was cutting about 600 jobs, or 6% of its workforce, admitting it had expanded too quickly during the coronavirus pandemic. Having already featured Kiona Estate and Heart of the Hill in previous Vineyard-Series releases, Ranch at the End of the Road joins the fray for the first time with this 2018 bottling. Starting in 2015 we embarked on the goal of releasing a top-tier, vineyard-designated wine from each vineyard. Kiona Vineyards and Winery encompasses five Red Mountain sites totaling 270+ estate acres. Of the Bordeaux red cultivars grown in our region, Malbec stands out as being particularly tasty in its youth and equally at ease with food or by itself. This certainly holds true on Red Mountain, where the wines tend to exhibit a softer, svelte tannin profile. Malbec was “discovered” by the new world wine-drinking public as a superb stand-alone culti- var for fruit-forward, dark, approachable wines with lots of depth. Only grapes that are susceptible to harsh growing conditions can be used in the production, creating low yields. Icewine tends to be more expensive because of the immense effort that goes into the winemaking process. These standards are monitored by the VQA (Vinters Quality Alliance), and relate to grape varieties, harvest procedures and winemaking. To be labeled as Icewine, there are certain requirements that must be met. Expect a wine with highly concentrated, sweet flavours with high acidity. You can also find Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Gewürztraminer used in some small lots. The most popular grape varietals used to make Icewine are Riesling, Vidal Blanc, and Cabernet Franc. The result is a juice that is high in sugar and acid, and concentrated with rich, delicious flavours. From there, they must be pressed before they thaw. To produce Icewine, grapes are left on the vine until a sustained temperature of -8☌ or below is reached, at which time they are hand picked. Production can be vigorous and can only happen in areas with below-freezing weather conditions. Ostensibly, Dylan, still legally Robert Zimmerman, went to New York to meet Woody Guthrie, his idol. His decision to shun college and pursue art countered prevailing trends of the time. A University of Minnesota dropout and a habitué of Minneapolis’s bohemian Dinkytown district, he had a seriousness of purpose that belied an outward shyness and a fluid identity. Jazz composer, multi-instrumentalist, and folk singer David Amram observed, “There was a cross-pollination of music, painting, writing-an incredible world of painters, sculptors, musicians, writers, and actors, enough so we could be each other’s fans. Skilled and striving artists in close proximity challenged traditional boundaries in folk music, both in lyrics and in style. The density fostered creative interactions as well as collaboration and competition, and the Village became an engine of artistic innovation. Numerous clubs lined these colorful streets. If observers wondered why the folk music revival flowered in the Village, they needed only to walk down MacDougal Street from West 4th and make a left onto Bleecker.
